Taking on a ‘monster’
It’s more than just a big burrito; it’s a monster and definitely lives up to its name. At 24 inches long, the Monster Burrito reigns supreme. And Colimas Mexican Restaurant at 3505 Summerhill Road has issued a challenge to those who think they can devour the meal.
The rules: The person taking on the challenge has 25 minutes to eat the entire burrito. If he/she finishes in time, the meal is free. No help, no breaks–only eating–which can be done with a fork, but it’s much more fun to just dive in.
The Challenge: The burrito was placed in front of me at 11:31 a.m., meaning I had until 11:56 to finish. At first, I didn’t know where to start, and finally I just bit into it. What wasn’t expected of something so big was the taste. The flavor was amazing and my stomach was empty. For my burrito, I chose carne asada (steak) with rice, beans, sour cream, guacamole, lettuce, tomato. Other choices include chicken, beef, and other menu items.
About 10 minutes into the challenge, I was full, but I continued stuffing my face, hoping to claim victory. By the time I reached 15 minutes, I had to stop in order to keep from throwing up. Only having finished half, it was still a victory, for the burrito is meant to feed six people. Since I didn’t finish, I paid the $14, which was a great price.
In the restaurant’s 8 years of business, only four people have successfully completed the challenge, two of these people being Marines. Apparently not eating breakfast was not enough preparation.
Overall, the restaurant’s atmosphere was chill, with mellow yellow colored walls, maps of Mexico and songs of Spanish artists playing. If you’re in a hurry and want a good Mexican meal hit up their drive through.
