Tradition.

It’s what drives Texas High and fuels our devotion to our school and the people in it. Texas vs. Arkansas week and its myriad of annual events, dances, pageants, Friday night football- all tried-and-true, all eagerly awaited every year.

It’s easy to get lost in the customs already maintained, but there is always room for more, and this year’s senior class officers have introduced what they hope to be a beloved new tradition- Senior Sunrise, and its partner, Senior Sunset, set for the end of the year.

“We learned about this from our state convention for Student Council last spring, and I really liked the idea,” senior class Vice President Ali Richter said. “It is a great way to unite the oldest students on campus before and after their last year in high school.”

It’s a bittersweet moment for seniors, as they usher in what ultimately is their last year of childhood.

“It symbolizes a new beginning, a fresh start to the year- kinda getting everyone together, the collaboration, the camaraderie,” Principal Brad Bailey said. “Then on the flip side, going in at the end of the year, where you can reminisce on the year and how it went and all the relationships you’ve built.”

A balloon launch and breakfast are planned; students can bring blankets or folding chairs if they wish.

“I think it’s a great idea,” Bailey said. “I think it’s great to get our students involved. We’re excited to be a part of it.

UPDATE: Due to bad weather, the event has been rescheduled for Friday, Sept. 2. Seniors should meet in the pit at 6:30 a.m. After Senior Sunrise, the annual Bacon Fry will commence.
