Old tradition; New Twist

Texas has to beat Arkansas this year, not just in football, but also in collecting food for those in need. The district that collects the most pounds will be named the TexarCANa Kick Hunger Bowl Champion.

Items can be donated at any TISD campus until Sept. 9 or brought to the gate at the Texas vs. Arkansas football game on Sept. 10.

Student Council is ready to get started because they believe this is a worthy cause to dedicate their time to.

“Everyone in our community is not as blessed as us, so it is our job to go and help them meet that need,” Student Body vice president Wynden Williams said. “Also, I want to win for the obvious reason, to beat Arkansas High. It’s a tradition that I would love to continue.”

This competition is between the Texas and Arkansas school districts. Each district will have about two weeks to collect canned foods and during the halftime of the Texas vs. Arkansas game they will weigh all of the food that has been collected and the district with the heaviest amount of food will win.

“We are trying to get as much as we possibly can; there is not a specific limit that we’re putting on ourselves,” Williams said. “Projects like this are fun because it’s a chance to get the whole school and community involved in something that we are passionate about.”

Canned vegetables and boxed items that are nonperishable are the items needed.  Even though winning is ideal, the thing to keep in mind is that this is a project with a goal of providing food to people who are without.

“Food could be considered more important than something like clothes because you can’t survive in this world without it,” Williams said. “The food that we raise will be there to service a great amount of families.”

Though this is a competition with sides divided by the state line, this is an opportunity to make this into something more than just a rivalry. It is something that can be learned from school and statewide.

“I hope our school will learn that anything is possible with teamwork and determination,” Williams said. “Our community can learn by coming together and helping to meet the need of so many people.”

Just as the Texas versus Arkansas football game happens every year Williams believes this competition should be an annual event.

“This should become a tradition just as much as the Bacon Fry or anything else that takes place that week,” Williams said. “It gives our school, district, and community the chance to come together and help one another, not to mention it gives us another opportunity to beat Arkansas High at something.”
