The UIL academics team took home third place overall at a practice meet in Mount Pleasant on Jan. 6-7.
UIL Academic Coordinator Elaine Harrell was pleased about the team’s overall performance.
“This was our first meet of the season and our team performed wonderfully,” Harrell said. “I think our UIL academic team and coaches will be a winning force at district, region and state this year.”
Individual and team awards were as follows:
Calculator: Jonathan Luna, fifth place.

Editorial Writing: Morgan Williams, third place.
Feature Writing: Carlye Hudspeth, second place; Brianna Sellers, sixth place.
Headline Writing: Emily Hoover, second place; Carlye Hudspeth, fifth place.
Informative Speaking: JB Wells, fifth place.
LD Debate: Paige Oliver, third place (perfect speaker points).
Literary Criticism: Emily Hoover, first place. Second place team: Emily Hoover, Jessi Chapman, Heather Lanier, Victor Wedding, Alex Walker.
Mathematics: Jonathan Luna, fourth place.
News Writing: Morgan Williams, first place; Carlye Hudspeth, fifth place.
