Golf team tees off to good start

Story by Daniela Correa, staff writer

The rivalry between Texas and Arkansas High is one that continues to be unforgettable, even after the many years of competitive games and matches. The varsity golf team played their first match of the season against Arkansas High Sept. 4 at Northridge Country Club. Texas High won this match by 46 points, leaving the score at 294-340.

After practicing almost everyday this summer and continuing to play tournaments throughout the off season, the boys were more than ready for this match.

“We mainly practiced individually,” junior Russell Thomas said. “This helped us shoot like we were supposed to.”

Even though the team practices individually, Thomas thinks the Tigers still work well as a team.

“We showed what we were capable of,” Thomas said. “We really came together as a team.”

The Tigers gave it their all, and started this season well with their individual scores very low. Despite their success, they recognize that they have weaknesses and hope to improve for future tournaments.

“I feel like we played good,” junior Garrett May said.“We had a lot of work to do but it was a good start.”

Even though they have confidence in their skills, the team still feels like they have lot of practicing to do to improve their strategies. Many of them believe they can be better in some way.

“I played great but had a couple bad shots,” Thomas said, “I need to work on my mental game.”

Individually and as a team, the Tigers’ spirit is up and strong. They hope to keep getting victories throughout the rest of the season.
“I still have a lot of work to do,” May said. “ But I feel like we definitely have a chance to keep winning.”
