Bright lights illuminate Tiger Stadium, orange fills the student section and hundreds of fans scream their lungs out. As the energy for Friday’s game builds, the Texas High Student Council holds a week of dress-up days full of spirit and support.
What is Texas vs Arkansas Week?
Sept. 15-19, 2025, marks the events of Texas vs Arkansas week, along with the tangible excitement and rivalry between the Texas Tigers and an Arkansas team. Each of the five dress-up day themes features different phrases against Arkansas. Hillbilly, camo, Texas, western and aprons all symbolize hunting, cooking and defeating the opposing team.
What is the history behind this event?
This year marks the unofficial 110th anniversary of playing against an Arkansas team. In 2015, the Tigers lost the centennial game against Arkansas High School. Since then, the rivalry with AHS has significantly diminished. In 2020, Arkansas canceled the game the week of the scheduled date because some believed Texas High players had COVID-19, though that proved to be untrue. Some suspected that the coaches pulled out because of their shrinking school and team. In place of AHS, the Tigers now play against other Arkansas teams to maintain the tradition.
Why is this week important?
This tradition occurs every year, and it does not seem to be stopping any time soon. In the early 1970s to 2000s, the rivalry between the twin cities truly thrived. From cheerleaders making signs for each football player to the festivities of the Bacon Fry, the variety of celebrations ignited the atmosphere of this annual event.
How is the legacy going to continue?
The student council works hard each year to keep the event alive with its annual presentation at state conventions for the Texas High School Annual Conference (TASC) and continues to host it every football season. The rivalry acts as a celebration to unify the school. As trends shift through different generations, this week seems to remain a classic inclusion to Texas High’s lengthy list of traditions.
