Excitement fills the air as Texas High School wishes the Mystery Cowboys of Morriss Elementary robotics program good luck in their upcoming robotics competition.
On Apr. 27, 2026, Texas High student council, leadership and cheer hosted a celebratory sendoff for Morriss Elementary’s robotics team.
“We got breakfast and goodie bags ready,” student body president Sanders Wiggins said. “[We] gave them donuts, kolaches and their bags and sent them on their way.”
Hosting this sendoff was Texas High’s way of showing their pride in Morriss Elementary as their robotics team prepared for competition after advancing to the world competition in Saint Louis, Mo.
“The sendoff that the students and staff of Texas High School meant the absolute world to our team. We went to Worlds knowing we had the support of our school, district and community behind us,” former robotics coach and mentor Nichole Ayers said. “It filled the kids and their coaches with a sense of pride, and we were honored to represent everyone who helped send us to the World Championships.”
The dedication and effort the team put into succeeding is evident through their progression from one competition to the next.
“Mr. Wells and Mrs. Williams both have full-time teaching positions, so the work they do for robotics is above and beyond their primary classroom roles,” Ayers said. “They host after school practices for the kids two to three days a week, and they both spent several Saturdays at tournaments this season.”
The Morriss coaches’ devotion to their students in preparing for competition that takes place away from public view does not reveal the totality of hours of hard work.
“This time that they pour into our students outside of school hours is time that comes out of their own personal time,” Ayers said. “It is time that they spend away from their families, friends and pets.”
