Painting, sketching, and sculpting are all classified as mediums of art, with their own distinctive characteristics. As of recently many of these mediums have paved way into the Texas High art showcase, receiving praises for their eccentric qualities.
On Feb. 22, 2025, art students from Texas High presented their artwork to a few judges, hoping to advance to state, yet only a select few continued forward. To show appreciation for their hard work, a few art teachers and their students prepared and hosted an art show at the Sullivan Performing Arts Center on April 3, 2025.
“This show is a way for us to celebrate our achievements,” Fine Arts teacher Shay Philips said. “We had artwork from elementary, TMS, and high school, so you’ll get a huge breadth of works from all over the district.”
Even though the elementary and middle school artists weren’t at the show to showcase the pieces themselves, all work was hung up and signed. All of these art pieces tell their own story from the perspective of the artists who created them, all meaning different things.
“Most of the art is artists and rappers and about their music,” Sophomore Caidan Moore said. “Their lyrics and songs kinda motivate me to keep going like Lauryn Hill.”
Although this art show seemed to just showcase the pieces, it also had some sculptures and paintings up for sale to help raise money for anyone who wants to pursue art as a career or a regular hobby.
“Those works are going to be auctioned off to find a scholarship fund,” Phillips said. “Which is a scholarship that we give to seniors every year that want to pursue an art degree.”
Even though the show was created to honor the works of the students, their teachers helped out along the way to guide them as better artists all year. Art isn’t just something you pick up one day and master, it takes lots of time and practice to learn the skill.
“We had lots of creative art teachers who were willing to help us with the process,” Senior Lila Ross said. “They helped us learn how to capture our emotions and create something we can be proud of. “
