Students walk around the pond, by construction, on their way to class every day. However, a recent change in the scenery occurred around this area.
Now, a mother goose can be seen sitting on her eggs to keep them warm. Teachers and administrators at Texas High School even put a sign up in an attempt to keep students from bothering the geese.
“About a month and a half ago, the goose laid eggs, and kids were bothering it,” principal Ben Renner said. “[The Mother Goose] can get a little protective, and that was bothering the kids, and we just want them to give her her space.”
Renner fully supports the sign and its place on the school grounds. However, the idea to implement the sign came straight from the student body.
“That goose chose to have that area as a safe place, and I wanted our students to be aware that she’s being a protective mother,” assistant principal Dr. Adam Bell said. “That’s kind of what lead to that whole ‘mama goose says get to class.’”
Bell came up with the original idea to put a sign up in order to keep the students away from the goose. After this, Bell told others about his idea and got their help with bringing it to life.
“Dr. Bell came to me and told me that there were a lot of students that were kind of aggravating and egging her on,” graphic design teacher Cindy Snell said. “We just wanted her to be at peace and take care of her future babies.”
Privacy proved to be an important necessity to keep both the geese and the students safe during this time. In addition, creating the sign brought joy to those involved by giving them a chance to do something they love.
“I made this sign because he needed it quick,” Snell said. “I love to design, and sometimes it’s hard for me to keep myself from taking over students’ designs.”
A lot of preparation and teamwork goes into creating a sign such as this. Several teachers and administrators saw a need and made it happen, working with each other to get the job done.
“It was kind of just a need that we saw happen,” Bell said. “We, together as a team, made it come to fruition right there.”
