Laughter fills the aisles, shy smiles turn into excited chatter and the simple act of shopping becomes a core memory. As officers and kids walk side by side down the Target aisles at Shop with a Cop, they bond over shared excitement, choose gifts and create a sense of connection and community spirit that lasts well beyond the holiday season.
On Dec. 2, 2025, numerous branches of law enforcement joined forces this Christmas season, bringing joy to children in need through gifts and festive experiences. Stay-at-home mom Brittney Petro, a mother of five, receives immense support, allowing her to give her children a brighter holiday season.
“This helps tremendously, just them getting to participate in all [of] this,” Petro said. “Having five kids, it takes a burden off of me.”
Petro, filled with gratitude for the relief this event brings to her family, also connects her support to a lifelong respect for the people behind the badge.
“I’ve always looked at law enforcement with respect,” Petro said. “I know that it is their job to help people in need, and my daddy was a police officer.”
Preston King, one of five children, shared how special that assistance felt to him. He lit up as he described his experience when given the change to shop alongside an officer and pick out something of his own.
“I was able to buy whatever I wanted with my officer,” King said. “My favorite thing was my Hellcat Lego set.”
After reflecting on his favorite toy from the event, King expressed appreciation for the role his mother plays at home with his siblings.
“My mom helps us out a lot,” King said. “ She has helped me by teaching me how to take care of my siblings.”
The guidance from his mom helps shape the way he thinks about Christmas, guiding him to see the holiday as a time for giving, gratitude and being present for the people he loves.
“Christmas is spent with your family, friends and caring about other people,” King said. “I’m most excited about spending time with my family and my mom.”
