With every touchdown at Grim Stadium, the cheers from the stands only grow louder. Cheerleaders fly through the air, band members play their instruments as loud as they can and the student section screams with all their hearts.
Texas High School’s football team uses its spirit to work toward victory, especially the team’s starting quarterback.
This year’s quarterback, senior Kam Wrightner, went above and beyond this football season.
At the Nacogdoches home game, he beat the school record for the total number of passing touchdowns with 13/14 passing, 243 passing yards, seven passing touchdowns and 297 total yards.
It seems that with exceedingly hard work and practice, Wrightner continually pushes himself to surpass all expectations.
“Coming into the season, I didn’t expect to break any records just because it was my first year playing quarterback,” Wrightner said. “[However] after the third game, I had around 17 touchdowns, so I kind of had a feeling I could push to break the record.”
Wrightner didn’t just wish to break the record; he also worked closely with his coaches and dedicated the entire season to achieving his goal.
“All [of] my coaches impacted my season,” Wrightner said. “From all the early meetings we had at quarterback school, and all the film sessions and drills.”
While Wrightner did work diligently to beat the record, he didn’t do it alone.
“My teammates showed up big and were the reason I broke those records. I couldn’t do it without my wide receivers,” Wrightner said. “I believe all three of my starting wide receivers had 10 touchdowns apiece at least, and my linemen gave me enough time to get it to those guys.”
This accomplishment will remain a major victory for Wrightner, and he will always cherish the results of his perseverance.
“I feel great knowing I passed a lot of great quarterbacks’ records,” Wrightner said. “I feel like I accomplished something big.”
