Netflix shows have hold on productions

Writers strike puts a pause on new releases

No shows, no movies, nothing new. Students will aimlessly scroll through a plethora of streaming services after school only to soon find that there’s virtually nothing to watch.

The Writer’s Guild of America (WGA) strike started on May 2, 2023. Screenwriters have quit working and set up picket lines. Many have made signs saying things like, “Do the write thing,” and “Alexa will not replace us.”

Demands include better pay, better residuals (compensation for reusing a writer’s work), staffing requirements and shorter exclusivity terms and assurance regarding AI replacement. Essentially, the writers will refuse to work until they get what they want.

While seemingly miniscule, this strike affects many well known movies and TV shows, preventing them from continuing production. This list includes many fan favorites, a few of which are listed below.

1. “It Ends With Us”

Based on a New York Times bestseller by Colleen Hoover, the story follows a girl named Lily through a complex love story. She meets a doctor named Ryle and becomes the exception to his no-dating rule. However, just as everything starts looking up, Lily’s first love, Atlas, comes back into the picture and starts to complicate things. Lily now has to overcome these new challenges and try to get her happily ever after.

2. “Stranger Things” Season 5

A treasured show for many, Stranger Things is set to have only one more season before it is wrapped up. The show, which takes place in the small town of Hawkins, Indiana in the 1980s, explores mysterious and supernatural forces, beginning with the disappearance of a 12-year-old boy. As this mystery unravels, a strange little girl shows up, and secret experiments are subsequently uncovered.

3. “The Last of Us” Season 2

The Last of Us is a relatively new show that premiered on Jan. 15, 2023. It is set in a post-apocalyptic world that was destroyed by a fungus called “cordyceps”, which turns people into zombie-like creatures to spread infection. The show features two people, Joel and Ellie, attempting to cross the country and find the group called the Fireflies who are hoping to develop a cure.
