On April 21, 2025, at 7:35 a.m., Catholic leader, Pope Francis of Rome, Italy, died in the Vatican. Earlier this year, Francis was diagnosed with double pneumonia, and he fought a lengthy battle until being discharged earlier this month. Cardinal Kevin Farrell announced the Pope’s death with “profound sadness.” The Vatican’s TV channel streamed this statement for audiences to hear.
A new pope will likely be elected within 15 to 20 days of Francis’ death. The process of choosing a new leader for the Catholic Church includes all cardinals under the age of 80 gathering in the Sistine Chapel to vote. The cardinals can hold only 4 rounds of voting a day, and rounds may only last for 11 days. Several Texas High students mourn the loss of the Pope, but are excited to see the Catholic Church undergo new leadership.
“Based on previous elections, I estimate it will take about a week for the cardinals to elect a new pope,” sophomore Natalie Laguna said. “I am eager to find out who gets elected, but at the same time, I’m sad to see Pope Francis’ journey on earth end.”
After electing a new Pope, the Pope must decide whether to live a simpler life or embrace the more extravagant lifestyle at the Vatican.
“Personally, I believe that decision is up to the Pope,” sophomore Wyatt Cowan said. “Although he may not choose to live with the common people, he can still give away the great things he has and dedicate his life to serving the people.”
Many catholics are inspired by Pope Francis’ words and actions throughout his life, and wish to follow Christ as deeply as he did.
“To me, the Pope was a very important figure in my life that I forever will strive to be like,” freshman Karla Vasquez said. “He was a great, Christ-like man who accomplished amazing things, and his legacy will be remembered forever.”
