 The shift to remove religion from public schools began around 1950 and continued until the Supreme Court's ruling in McCollum v. Board of Education. With an 8-1 ruling, the Supreme Court decision against public schools' use of religious instruction marked the beginning of limiting the influence of religious doctrine in public education systems.
