The American Shakespeare Company is back in Texarkana for their touring performance of “Antigone” featuring a pre-show filled with live music from the actors. The performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 27 with the pre-show beginning at 7 p.m. at the Sullivan Performing Arts Center.

Admission to the show is free, but a ticket is required. The performance has been funded by an anonymous donor at Bancorp South, along with support from the Tiger Theatre Company and Tiger Theatre Booster Club.

“This is a professional theater that travels all over the United States and performs shows in the style of Shakespeare’s blackfriar theater, which is the indoor theater,” Tiger Theatre Director Lisa Newton said. “There is seating in the audience [and] on stage. The first group of people to get there will be able to watch on stage. When the doors open, [the company] interacts with the audience and does little vaudeville performances.”

“Antigone,” the ASC’s first foray into Greek tragedy. In the aftermath of her brothers’ bloody war, Antigone is left torn. Her brother Eteocles will be honored, but her brother Polyneices will be shamed and denied funeral rites. In this ancient tale, Antigone stands for morality in spite of punishment as one of the earliest heroines in drama.

“It’s an amazing opportunity to experience live, professional theater in Texarkana for free,” Newton said.
