Changes to school day set for new year

Story by Ricky Cooks, in-depth editor

It’s time to return to Tigerland, but this school year brings a few changes within Texas High’s daily operations.

Unlike previous years, school begins at 8:25 a.m., so make sure to set your alarm clocks accordingly. Classes also end later this year, at 3:50 p.m. These time changes are the result of students being released for summer earlier than previous years, on May 26, 2017 instead of well into June.

Another new aspect of the school year is the Enrichment Period, a 30 minute class that allows students to participate in various extracurricular activities during the day. They were originally created to allow students that failed their STAAR to get tutoring every day, but have since expanded to include a variety of other activities.

Besides tutoring, other Enrichments include basket-weaving, yoga, Freshman 101, book club, UIL, Independent Research and special classes for certain leadership positions. Students chose their Enrichments during the previous school year or over the summer.

The Enrichment classes will begin on Aug. 24, the third day of school. Students will receive their Enrichment assignments on the first or second day of school. During the first two days, second period will be longer so that beginning of the year information can be relayed.
