Volleyball takes hit during senior night

Volleyball+takes+hit+during+senior+night

The last home game of volleyball season is known as “Senior Night,” as all the seniors on the team are recognized. Seniors this year are Naomi Larsen, Montira Aldridge, Alexis Burns, Samone Campbell, Dominic Weir, Cydney Higgins, Brianna Murphy and Shakayla Scott. Each girl moves out to the middle of the court to be announced and receive their gift from the team.

The game against Royce City opens with a bang as freshman Jalissa Trotter spikes in the first point.
The next few moments are rough, and the Tigers go down 8-3.
Then senior Naomi Larson tips in a point, and the Tigers are back in, winning the next 6 points of 7.
Tied, 9-9.
Junior Rachel Lassiter tips a point.
Lead? Not a chance.
Tied, again, 11-11.
Every point’s going to be a struggle.
We’re up 16-15, down 18-17, then, tied again at 18-18.
We win the next two.
Finally, up 23-20.
Senior Briana Murphy spikes in 24, and finally the Lady Tigers pull it out 25-21.

Second game.
This’ll go the same way, right?
Lady Tigers up 2-1.
Then, somehow, down 6-4.
Freshman Chanell Hayes blocks to tie 7-7.
From there, the Tigers are consistently trailing.
9-8, 13-11, 15-12, 17-13.
Finally they seem to pull it together.
From being down 19-16, they come back to tie.
19-19.
Freshman Jalissa Trotter scores another point, and for the first time in 15 minutes, the Lady Tigers are ahead.
Then–a contested point.
The ref says Royce City won the point; Coach Hardy disagrees. They review, and the point still goes to Royce City.
From there, nothing goes quite right.
From tied 20-20, the Tigers quickly lose the second game, with a final score of 25-22.
“I think the student section was really loud and excited,” senior Emily Speer said. “I think both teams played really well, I think our girls got tired toward the end, but they hung in there.”

Third game.
Lady Tigers are fighting,
Tied 8-8.
But they are still rattled.
Soon, down 15-12.
Junior Whitney Lewis tips to score point 14, and senior Briana Murphy ties it up.
Then, Royce City gets a point. And another. And another.
Down 21-16, the Lady Tigers have a huge gap to make up.
Every point, every call seems to be against them.
They never come close.
Tigers lose the third game 25-17.
“We really didn’t have any teamwork, we really didn’t have any communication,” junior Erica Hardy said. “Some people got their heads down. Nobody was talking.”

Fourth.
Last chance–lose this game and it’s all over.
Down from the very first.
4-2.
8-3.
9-3.
Come ON.
The Lady Tigers push back, scoring a point, then two, three…
Then Royce City begins another spree.
From 9-7, we go down 11-7, then 13-9.
Can’t quite get the points, can’t quite make up the difference.
The ball flies over the net.
Another point for Royce City.
20-13.
23-13.
Slow, torturous.
The Lady Tigers lose their last game 25-13.

For the seniors, this last night was something of a disappointment.
“Senior night was really special; I played for the last four years and it all came down to tonight,” senior Cydney Higgins said. “In my uniform, I’ll never play on this court again. To step out there and lose like that was just kinda awful.”
