Top books to check out of the library

Story by Andrea Loredo, staff writer

Reading is a part of every person’s life when they are in school, whether it is for an assignment or for pure entertainment. Whatever the case may be, many students don’t know what kind of book to pick up whenever they need to read, and that can be pretty stressful. Here are the most checked out books you may be interested in.

“One Piece”

Written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda, this Japanese manga series follows the adventures of young pirate boy, Monkey D. Luffy. Throughout the first volume, Luffy tries to find most of his crew and the One Piece treasure to become king of the pirates. The treasure is hidden somewhere within the ocean and the Grand Line, a fictional series of islands. Throughout his adventures, Luffy faces different challenges to get to the treasure before anyone else does.

“City of Bones”

“City of Bones” is the first book in the “Mortal Instruments” series written by Cassandra Clare. After her mother is kidnapped, Clary Fray discovers that she comes from a family of Shadowhunters, a bloodline that fights demons and other supernatural creatures. Along with the Lightwood family, she must find a way to save her mother and both the human and Shadow World from evil.

“The Rose that Grew from Concrete”

This poetry book written by Tupac Shakur contains poetry about poverty and motherhood, just like in the biographies by Van Gogh and Mandela. Each poem has two versions: one in his own handwriting, and the other in typed form. Through his poems, Shakur tells stories about what he believes in and the way that he feels toward certain topics.

“Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief”

This is the first book in the “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” series written by Rick Riordan. This book follows the story of a young boy named Percy Jackson who discovers that he is a demigod, a child of a human and Greek god, and all the struggles that he faces during his adventures.

“The Fault in Our Stars”

Written by John Green, this book follows the story of Hazel, a girl with stage 4 cancer who attends a cancer support group and meets a boy named Augustus Waters. They fall in love even though they know that it may not last long and that their time together may be cut short. Even through the heartaches and the many doctor appointments, they do not let their love die. Hazel and Augustus show that with love you can over-look pretty much any difficulty that life throws at you, even if it may bring you to an unwarranted situation.

“Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days”

This is the seventh book in the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” series written by Jeff Kinney. The story follows a boy named Greg Heffley and his summer as an introvert. Through the book, his mother attempts to make him more social and wants him to spend more time with his family. He, on the other hand, believes that his summer fun is encased inside his room with video games. The novel does a good job relating to teenagers who share the same circumstances.

“Gone”

This is the first book in the “Gone” series by Michael Grant. When teens, middle schoolers and children are all that is left of the human population in Perdido Beach, California, they must find a way to maintain order and survive. Every day that goes by the teens discover more about their new  deadly and dangerous powers. How will it end when supplies start running low and teens start choosing sides based on who they think will survive?

“Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone”

Harry Potter is a young boy who is suddenly accepted into Hogwarts, a school for witchcraft and wizardry. At this school, he discovers his magical past and meets wizards and magical creatures. The series was written by J.K. Rowling and is still one of the best-selling series on a global scale due to its imaginative fantasy world.

“Trails of Apollo: Hidden Oracle”

The first book in the new series by Rick Riordan follows the god of the sun, Apollo. He is being punished for something that he does not recall doing by his father, Zeus, and his punishment is being turned human. He has to endure difficult trials with no use of his magical powers and one demigod calling the shots.

“Maximum Ride: the Manga”

The manga series is based on an actual book series by James Patterson. A group of children become human-avian hybrid and are all born with wings. Max is now the leader of the Flock, the group of children, and is trying her best to protect them from the people that did all of those experiments on them. The manga series has brought the characters and story that Patterson created into a vivid and easy-to-read book that people enjoy.
