Clear bag policy now in place at Marshall ISD

Story by Craig Crawford and Charli Hueter

A new policy at Marshall Independent School District, as of Sept. 10, reads:

“Marshall ISD will be instituting a Clear Bag Policy at ALL athletic events. A copy of the policy is available at the Maverick ticket office. Bags must be clear and not exceed 12 inches by 12 inches by 6 inches, or be a clear one–gallon resealable plastic freezer storage bag.”

The clear bag policy is modeled after the one used by NFL and later employed by the majority college athletics, which were introduced as a deterrent to domestic terrorism.

Students at Texas High who want to attend any Marshall ISD sporting event will be required to honor this policy.

Texarkana Independent School District currently has no policy in place regarding bags at sporting events.

“I think anything to enhance the safety of the people who are attending the events is a great thing,” assistant principal Bettie Stark said. “So, I don’t have a problem with the clear bag policy.”
