Story by Macy Maynard, staff writer

May is Mental Health Awareness month. Mental health affects many teens and young adults. One in six people aged from 6-17 are diagnosed with a mental health disorder each year in the U.S. according to the Center of Disease, Control and Prevention. Also, there have been more than 47,500 deaths by suicide in 2019, which is about one death every 11 minutes.

Nobody knows the extent of someone’s struggles, so remember that you never know what someone is going through. By spreading awareness, educating others and checking up on yourself, you can help change these statistics for the better.

If you or someone you know is struggling with mental illness or has questions, help-lines and resources are below.
