Tigers learn lessons in loss to Evangel

SHREVEPORT — Texas High suffered a beating tonight at the hands of Evangel Christian Academy and finished with a score of 54-7. The Tigers were able to stay competitive early, but the Eagles’ size and talent advantage was too much to overcome.

Early in the game, the Tigers gave up a few big plays that set them back, but they were able to move the ball a bit themselves. Junior running back Treveon Walker broke off several long runs, including a 72-yard sprint for the Tigers’ only score.

“It felt good,” Walker said. “I was a little tired after, but it felt good.”

At the end of the first half, the Eagles were up 28-7. Tiger players were confident that they could still play like they did in the opener.

“We were playing good,” senior Jackie Allen said at the half. “We need to be more physical. I need to play like I did last week.”

At halftime, fans still felt good about the possibility of a comeback.

“I feel very optimistic,” freshman Kip Williams said. “We can make a turn-around at any time. Our team is one of the best.”

However, things did not turn around. The uphill battle for the Tigers only got worse.

“Our spirit is on a deep downhill,” junior cheer escort Charlie Goins said. “The other team is on a steep uphill.”

Even though the team suffered a horrible defeat, players feel that the loss could improve the team.

“A loss always changes a team,” junior center Justin Lewis said. “It helps us see what adjustments need to be made.”

The experience of playing a top tier program will also help the young group learn valuable lessons.

“It helped us realize that we have to play harder,” Walker said. “We got some learning experience. We have to get better.”

The loss has given the team important knowledge and experience, but the most important thing gained was a fiery desire to win. Senior Lavonte Henry was confident that the team has learned this lesson.

“We won’t lose another game.”
