Junior Asia Williams digs up a spike, creating a perfect pass to senior Jalissa Trotter who sets it up for a dominating hit by senior Chanell Hayes. This power team defeated Mt. Pleasant Lady Tigers Friday, at the Texas Tiger Center.

The first set flew by as Texas High Lady Tigers finished it off with an end score of an excruciating 25-6. Libero, Williams hit the court multiple times popping the ball up for Trotter to set outside hitter Hayes, middle hitter Kristin “Monie” McDuffie and right side hitter Alissa Walker.

“During the first set we were really communicating and getting our rhythm down,” Williams said. “After that we got too comfortable and stopped talking.”

The second set was not as smooth as the Mt. Pleasant Lady Tigers stepped up and challenged the girls. Texas High still pulled out a second win, beating them 25-19. Hayes, McDuffie and Walker stopped several Mt. Pleasant spike attempts by pulling their force together and creating a brick-wall system of blocking.

“We were starting to get too relax and playing them easier than we should,” Hayes said. “As a team we need to learn to stay positive the whole game and not get down,”

The third set kept lady tiger fans on the edge of their seat as Mt. Pleasant stayed with the lady tigers.

“Every time we got a point, they would get a point,” McDuffie said. “It was so nerve racking we had to pull everything we had to get ahead,”

Finally, Texas pulled it together and won the close set 25-22, officially defeating Mt. Pleasant in their first district game.

“I’m really excited for district; We have a good team with good girls,” Hayes said. “I mean, we’re all going through some type of hurt, but we’re learning how to keep standing up and playing how Coach taught us.”
