Overrated fashion in 2020

Trends that were way overdone

Oversized and simple, these are featured items of this year’s most popular fashion trends.

Story by Katey Pappas, staff writer

2020 had many new fashion trends. Some were outrageous, some were boring, and some were beautiful. This story is focusing on trends that aren’t necessarily bad or ugly, but very over-worn.

Chunky sneakers

There’s no doubt that these clunky shoes have become extremely popular in the last few years, but the shoes have become even more popular in the past year. Whether this style is modeled by Bella Hadid or Ariana Grande, these shoes don’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon.

Baggy Sweatshirts

There’s no doubt that a baggy sweatshirt is one of the most comfortable clothing items you can find. They are perfect for school because they are in dress code and are super soft. However, these comfy shirts aren’t just worn in situations where you want to throw on something quick and hurry off to run errands. People wear baggy sweatshirts on nights out or pair them with strangely formal items (as seen on some runways). Sweatshirts are high in comfort, but high in fashion? Not.

Floating eyeliner

This is a very unusual but strangely popular trend. This new makeup style includes a line of eyeliner being drawn far above the lash line, but outlining the eye socket. Hopefully this trend “floats” away in the new year.

Tiny Sunglasses

These tiny specs are not very practical when it comes to protecting your eyes from the sun. They barely cover your eyes, but many celebrities like Kendall and Kylie Jenner seem to love wearing them on sunny days out in California. Some stars, however, have expressed their dislike toward the glasses. Anne Hathaway and Mindy Kaling both have said they hated the style. It seems like these small sunglasses are really making a big scene.

Crop tops

Everywhere you look there is at least one teen dressed in a midriff-baring top and some kind of shorts or leggings. This trend can be seen especially on TikTok, where many of the young creators sport this style. Creators like Charli D’amelio and Addison Rae wear these tops in many of their videos. These tops are still everywhere in 2021, so it is highly unlikely that this trend will be leaving anytime soon.

High Waisted Leggings

There’s nothing wrong with a pair of leggings. They’re comfortable, light, and go with almost everything. This style, however, is worn almost everywhere. They are usually paired with a crop top, which is a style that a huge majority of teen girls wear all the time. Hopefully companies don’t decide to stop making these pants, because millions of people wouldn’t know what to wear anymore.

There is nothing wrong with any of these styles. Clothes are meant to make the person wearing them feel confident, happy and comfortable. If these clothes make you feel that way, that’s all that matters. I simply feel that these styles are incredibly common, and their popularity is baffling, but everyone has their own personal style, and that’s what makes people truly beautiful.
